Perspective

From the Oakland Coliseum, these fireworks would've filled the sky, obscuring everything else with their color and majesty.

From that same Coliseum, on the darkest clearest night, you might have been able to see Andromeda galexy as a tiny, faint smudge.  In reality? It looks like this.

Which is more impressive? To those 50,000 people at Oakland Coliseum, I imagine the fireworks were pretty impressive.  In the great fabric of the Universe? I'm going with the one trillion stars in Andromeda.

One is the life, career and passing of somebody who was once talented, and has spent the last 20 years in a narcotic haze that would scare Elvis.  The other is the real problems real people face in the real world.  Please, for the love of God, return us to our regularly scheduled program already.  The fireworks are over.  It's time to move on.

  1. I'd like to add that I've always found the smudges and polka dots of space 100 million times more perfect and entertaining than fireworks. They're so much better that they don't need to announce their presence to us with a loud bang and a crowd of people and other strange behaviors…. Oh, I want to find a dark field to lay in where I can actually see the stars.

  2. "Please, for the love of God, return us to our regularly scheduled program already."Dave Matthews Band (whom I lovelovelove) has this new song out called Funny the way it is… basically, the day/life could be awesome for one person and yet terrible for another, all at the same time. Perspective is right. When things around me are going well, I know someone else's life is crumbling, somewhere. And vice versa. It's equally frustrating and amazing all at the same time. Frustrating because I expect the rest of the world to know that too, and amazing because how can a day hold so many differences for each of us….
